RESERVED for Fiona,

Made in France in the early 1920's, at the height of the Art Deco Period - these lovely bookends are signed by the sculptor, GALLOT and decorated with the flowing forms of two stylised leaping deer. With their noses in the air and their graceful, elongated necks they have a gorgeous prancing pose - almost as if they are showing off to a crowd.

The two deer are mounted on solid three quarter inch blocks of dark brown marble, veined with cream and pink - and in perfect condition. The delicately designed spelter bodies have been lustre-bronzed, giving them a deep bronze sheen. The deer are standing in amongst tufts of long grass together with Art Deco styled breaking waves of water. The grasses and waves form the base of the sculptures where they are securely attached to the marble by screws. It is on the base of the waves that the artist has stamped his name, GALLOT.

Gallot was a prolific sculptor in France, working between the 1910's and the 1930's, often depicting wild animals in his work. These bookends are the largest we have:- a height including the base of over 8 inches, just over 20cm, with a base width of nearly 6 inches or 15cm and base depth of about 3.15 inches, or 8cm. They are very heavy, with the pair weighing in at just under 2.5 kilograms. A beautiful gift for an avid reader or nature lover, these have great Art Deco style and presence.
