Signed Henry Leaping Gazelle Bookends - Gilt Spelter Mounted on Solid Marble Plinths - 1930s French Art Deco - B1/36

A pair of beautiful Art Deco stylised Leaping Gazelle bookends - these guys seem to have had a very hard life; they are nice signed pieces that had at some point in their lives the dull golden finish had become very pitted. One of the marble bases had been damaged and happily the owners thought enough of them to have the marble repaired and refilled though the repair is clear to see and can be put to the back when on show. We have given them an uplift by gold-leafing the animals in a 'shabby-chic' manner - a bit of bling to give them a renewed life. So, with their imperfections and bright - yet rather shabby - gold finish that shouts the deco era, they are ready to show off again, all set to leap around in a new home.

The pair are originally from c.1930 and came from Central France. The gazelles are well sculpted and are signed by the sculptor, 'Henry' - the signature is hidden in the rushes at the hind feet of the deer. The solid black marble bases are about 3/4" thick and nicely weighted to hold up books or notepads, etc.

Dimensions: Overall height is 5.25 inches or just over 13cm. Width is 5.8" ( five and seven-eights of an inch) or 15cm by 2.5 inches or 6.5cm deep. The weight for the pair, without any packaging is 1.45 kilograms.
