Collection of Antique Lithographic Printed Engravings by Gustave Doré 1832-1883 - French Monochrome Fable Illustrations - AP1/24
A collection of twenty lithographic printed works by Gustave Doré, the celebrated French artist and illustrator; he is best known for his prolific output of wood engravings and it is these that have produced - via the electrotype shells on cylinder presses - the prints that we have for sale. Doré (1832 to 1883) was born is Strasbourg and his works frequently featured mythological scenes or fables and tales. Later in his life more of his art has religious themes. This collection features images such as Little red Riding Hood; Sleeping beauty; the Sleeping Giant; Tom Thumb; Puss in Boots; The Ogre's Lair and many others.
This collection of twenty prints is entirely in monochrome with the black image printed on off-white, antique card. The cards are all roughly 7.5" or 19cm high by 9.5" or 24cm wide. There are some variations; the Sleeping Beauty is just 6.5" high. An illustration of Puss in Boots has a tear on the right hand side. There is some foxing to the cards, however as the prints are in black, this does not show through the illustrations. One image with Puss inBoots does have three brown marks on the face of the page. This collection has been printed in collaboration with Pisan in the main, but also H Boetzel and François Pannemaker of Belgium.
