A Pair of French Antique Country Plates - Majolica / Feiance - French Decorative Plates - Late 1800's - PL1/005

An early pair of French Majolica plates, showing a floral design in greens and blues - very interestingly with an almost Art Deco border - but years in advance. Made in the late 1800's, when France was still in the Art Nouveau Period and had yet to discover the more streamline Art Deco, this lovely pair of plates was produced in beautiful, heavy Majolica. The floral design in the centre draws they eye, in a Woodland Style with bright blue Borage-style flowers and broad green leaves. A brown 'cord' decoration leads to the broad rim where the most stunning pale blue design surrounds the pattern.

The two plates are identical in pattern but differ slightly in depth of colour. There are some natural firing faults and the painting style is a little different, one is not as precise as the other. However, both have a large 'T' on the back in black showing that they were actually decorated by the same hand. The plates have been used and show signs of their age and some crackling to the glaze, as would be expected A very nice pair of antique interior decor plates, these are now very collectable items.
