Antique French Heavy Copper Fish Kettle - For Stove or Oven -   Poissoniere  - Antique Copper Fish Pan - Hand Made French Copper Pan - K403

This is well used fish kettle or poissonière from what must have been a busy professional kitchen, hand made from sheet copper. The pan has a shaped and turned collar for strength and a thick, round wrought steel handle with highly unusual, very decorative forged knot-style fixings to the bracket hinges. This lovely pan would date from the late 1800's to  the early 1900's.
Made from good heavy-gauge copper, this is a medium sized example of a copper fish kettle or fish pan - or as the French say Poissonière. The loop style fixings are highly unusual and we know it is an old example by the thickness or gauge of the copper as "they do not make them like they used to".....and the patina from age and use makes the decoration look fantastic.  It would make a great show piece in a kitchen or even a seafood restaurant.

As you can see, we haven't fully polished the pan, other than a little tickle to leave some of its age and patina...................the steel hand forged handle has lots of wear and features hand made copper rivets attaching the fixings to the body of the copper pan. The strainer base is still within but no longer has feet, so it is sitting on the base. This item came from the kitchen of a very old and large property in the city of Richelieu in central France. The building was being totally gutted to be converted into apartments and we purchased a huge amount of the contents from the contracters.

The dimensions are 9" / 225mm high with handle up and 3.5" / 90mm without, the bowl has a length of 20" / 510mm and width of 7.5" / 195mm. The pan weighs a hefty 2.3kg or just over 5lb.
