Antique Terracotta Baking Mold - French Tunnel Cake Mold - Made Before Bundt - Late 19th Century French Cookware - K392

Made in the days long before the Bundt Cake Mold was even thought of, the French (and Germans) were using a remarkably similar form to cook special cakes in their wood fire ovens - with a funnel that would help to bake the cake evenly, rather than burning the outside just to get the inside cooked. The result was a moist, perfectly baked cake with a beautiful shape.

This mold is 8.5" or 21.5cms in diameter at the top and stands at 4" / 10cm high. Without packaging the mold weighs 900 grams.

The Bundt mold was not invested until 1950, but this lovely ceramic item came from France and the superb patination bears witness to the huge number of cakes that have been baked by this humble terracotta mold. No doubt, it would perform as well today as it dod when it was made in the late 1800's. There is no maker's mark, just the impression of a number, '5' on the outside, perhaps relating to the size.
