French Longchamp Ceramic Oyster Plates

Beautiful white ceramic oyster plates - set of white French oyster plates - French celebration dining ware - PL027

We don't normally find as many of these in one place. They came from a storage cupboard of a restaurant that had stopped serving oysters over twenty years ago. The restaurant had stopped opening at Christmas, which is when the French consume enormous amounts of Oysters; so much so that the supermarkets have large refrigerated lorries outside just to contain the oysters they will sell over the holiday period, as they would not fit in their own cold stores.

Dating from the 1970's, these plates carry the 'Longchamp' crest on the back of each plate. The creamy white plates are fully glazed and there is some crazing to the glaze apparent on some of the plates as would be expected for that age. They have a pretty woven backgound pattern with rope style edging and six beautifully impressed oyster shell sections around a raised central bowl for lemon slices.

These plates are by the famous French pottery of Longchamp from the town of the same name in Burgundy. They weigh between 550 and 650grams or 1.3 - 1.6lb each and are 9.5" (or 240mm) in diameter. Each plate takes six oysters each and the centre area is for slices of Lemon.

We have ten perfect plates and will sell them as a set of four, six or ten - with an additional single plate with a slight chip to one edge that we will add for free should anyone buy all ten.
