Stunning antique French heavy decorated copper fish kettle - for stove top or oven - hammer decorated poissoniere - copper fish pan - K402

This fish kettle is stunningly decorated, with sinuous swirling lines hammered by hand into the copper body of this large copper wonder. The decoration lifts the mundane object - a fish kettle - into the realms of an art piece, or high-end kitchen decoration .
This is very a heavy gauge, large example of a copper fish kettle or fish pan - or, as the French say, Poissoniere. It is a truly unusual find; we know it is a very old example just by the thickness or 'gauge' of the copper and decoration ... they don't make things like they used to!.....and the patina of age highlights the decoration and make it look fantastic.  This would make a great show piece in any country kitchen - or maybe a fish restaurant.  It could date from anywhere between the 1700's to the mid 1800's, whan it was hand made in France.

As you can see, we haven't fully polished the pan, other than a little tickle to leave some of its age and patina...................it was constructed by hand from one large sheet of copper with a superb rolled collar to give added strength and ease of use. The steel hand wrought handle with worn heart-shaped brackets have solid, hand made old rivets attaching them to the body of the kettle. It would have been hammer forged, possibly by the local blacksmith and shows great skill. This item came from the kitchen of a very old and large property in the city of Richelieu in central France. The property was being totally gutted to be converted into apartments and we purchased a huge amount of the contents from the contracters.

The dimensions are 10" / 250mm high with handle up 5.5" / 140mm without and the bowl has a length of 20" / 510mm and width of 7.5" / 195mm. Weighing a hefty 3.1kg or just under 7lb.
