This is an interesting and intriguing piece. It was offered to us by a local lady who had inherited it from her Uncle. It was created by her grandfather in the late 'sixties or early 'seventies.

The illustration is inspirered by J R. R. Tolkein's novellea, "Smith of Wooton Major";  showing the person on the left offering an olive branch to the other person sitting in the barrel chair in front of the fire. They are accompanied by a dog and cats sitting at their feet.

There is a note taped to the back, gifting the plaque to 'Dan', saying it was made by his Father, presumably for his Mother who now gifts it to Dan with a short explanation. A paper copy of the illustration accompanies the block and it can be seen that the copy of the illustration is near-perfect. 

The plaque is made from very old, hard, dark Oak that was probably a remnant of a piece of antiquated furniture at that time; perhaps a stool or seat base - it even has an area of charing to the rear, perhaps from being too close to the fire or a candle. 

The plaque measures twelve inches square and stands about one and three-quarter inches high. inches deep. It weighs  a hefty 2100g or 4.3lb without any packaging. This is an enchanting piece of Irish folk art and although it has a hole drilled into the back, presumably to take a nail, to hang it on a wall - it would be perfect in the kitchen to stand pots on. This is in completely original, uncleaned condition.
