Four French Mid 1800s Décor Plates - unmarked Black and White Ceramics - French Antique Plates - PL1/021
Four antique French plates with picture story images. The plates have numbers against each image; in the mid to late 1800's, this type of transfer decorated plate, a series of picture - stories, was very popular and a collector could add to his or her collection over a number of years. We have four plates here, numbered 2,6,7 and 12, measuring 8" or 20cm in diameter. The four plates together weigh 1.1 kg.
Each plate has an image of a daily life event for those times gone past. The pictures show:
'Le Petit Jouer de Flute' - The Little Flute Player
'Les Curieux' - The Curious, or Inquisitives
'Les Premieres Fleurs' - The First Flowers
'Les Bone Amis' - The Good Friends
The plates, which date from the mid-1800's are made from 'Terre de Fer' which is an ironstone / ironware / earthenware. They have been well used and this is evident in their condition; each plate has one or more chips around the edges and although there are no actual cracks, Number 2 has a crack in the glaze and there are very small areas of discolouration. None of this detracts from their looks, rather, the condition complements it, as these are valued household items that have been used and loved, and that is their history for all to see.
The rims of the plates are decorated simply with raised flowers and heart-shaped leaves on the white ceramic and finished with a slight scallop to the curve of the edge.
These are very beautiful, very old plates that would make a very interesting and unusual antique display.
Your purchase will be very carefully packaged with recycled materials where possible and despatched via the Irish An Post postal service.
