This stunning antique French crucifix from c.1890 is a real statement piece, over 15" in height. The artefact has been assembled from three separate parts, with the ebonised cross laid upon an ebonised plaque that is surrounded by fret-cut and carved oak leaves; the surface of the cross has been either chip cut or poker-worked to give a contrasting matt effect to the decoration. The cross is beautifully shaped and carved in a Gothic style and the ensemble is finished with the cast metal Corpus Christi and INRI scroll both with a dark patina from many years of polishing - the overall effect with the dark figure on the black wood is breathtaking. Fortunately the wood is not a dense exotic hardwood so the weight is reasonable.
On the back, a small metal plate has been attached with a metal loop for hanging. The dimensions are: Height 15.5", width 9.25", depth overall about 2.5". Weight unpackaged is 535g. Aside from being a beautiful religious artefact, this is a lovely piece of art in its own right. It is in very good, antique condition with some marks of wear and patina as would be expected.
