Acquired as part of a collection in France - we were very fortunate to be invited to purchase from the estate of a lifelong collection - that of a well renowned French Religious Antiquities Expert. All items from this estate date from the 16th, 17th and 18th century.
This lovely Holy Water Font, or Benetier, is in the form of a cross surrounded by mushrooms and reeds with large seed-heads. The wood used is dark, probably French Walnut and the piece has been made in two distinct halves. The front half includes the water font in the base; beautiful smooth carving with two Lily leaves at the front of the round, hollowed out stoup. The back of the item is in the same style and wide-leafed reeds and seed heads in front of the cross which is styled as split timber with bark attached. the join between the two parts can be clearly seen. Looking at the base it is evident that the two pieces of wood are different; they might be the same timber species but they are not from the same piece. There is a slight difference in the carving style to the base between the front and the back. Surely there must be a very interesting story behind this.
Dimensions are: Height 11", Width at widest part of bas 5.75" and depth of 3" (28 x 14.5 x 7.5cm). Without any packaging, the font weighs 200 grams.
