Antique Ivory French Crucifix from c.Mid 1800's - Beautifully Carved Dieppe Christ on the Cross - Brass Inlaid - DIEPPE Carving - RC133

A beautifully carved crucifix from the Dieppe area of France made in the 1800s. The pale body of Christ, or Corpus Christi, is carved in intricate detail in three pieces and laid on a crucifix crafted from Mahogany hardwood with a Burr Walnut veneer containing twin fine brass inlays that outline this cross. This superb piece of work was crafted by a French Dieppe Craftsman in the middle of the nineteenth century.  As part of a collection, this item has been well preserved. Having stood the test of time it is available in very good condition today; the superb quality of the item and materials is reflected in the price.

Dieppe in France was the region where the very best sculptors worked at the end of the nineteenth century and this is apparent in the delicacy of the hand sculpting and cutting of the figure. The detailing on the figure of Christ is superb and the cross is fashioned in four parts, mitred together in the true, age-old craft fashion. This is easily one of the finest examples of this type of work that we have seen. Above the head of Christ is a plaque or scroll bearing the symbol 'INRI' for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. At the back of the cross there is a brass loop to allow for wall hanging. As can be seen, the item is in completely original condition and has been left uncleaned (see below). Should you wish to have other pictures to study please contact us and we would be happy to provide them for you.

The dimensions are:-
The wooden cross is 13.75" high x 7.5" wide x 0.35" deep...352 x 190 x 9mm
The Corpus is 5.5" high x 4.15" wide x approximately 1" deep....140 x 105 x 24mm

The pale Body of Christ and the INRI Plaque show some deposits of dust and would benefit from a professional clean as would the twin brass inlaid lines. There is a scratch to the veneer near to the base of the crucifix that could be removed. There is slight scratch to the veneer at  bottom of the crucifix that would probably disappear with an application of French Polish should you wish.
