Beautiful Bronzed Christ on Marquetry French Crucifix - 12"- France Late 1800s - French Classical Style Wooden Crucifix - RC165
A late 19th Century Crucifix from France - made c.1890, this very well made piece is a work of art, being made from a number of different species of wood. The main body of the cross is made from Mahogany, beautifully red-grained and heavy. Fine surface marquetry veneer has been applied in Walnut and what appears to be Rosewood, giving the effect of a feathering or chevron design radiating towards the centre point of the Cross, where the mitred joints meet. The surrounding edge of the cross is inlaid with an arrow head design of fruitwood and ebony banding.
The Figure of Christ is of spelter with a bronze-effect coating on the well defined cast Body of Christ. The INRI Scroll has very well defined lettering on a finely made scroll.
The Wooden Cross measures 12" high by 6.4" wide (30.5 x 16cm) and the Corpus Christi measures 5" x 3.5" (13 x 9cm). The Crucifix weighs around 200 grams without any packaging. On the back of the cross there is the a metal loop for wall hanging.
This is a nicely kept French antique piece in very good order; it remains uncleaned and in completely original condition.
