A magnificent and rare Antique Crucifix -  we were very fortunate to be invited to purchase from the estate of a lifelong collection - a well renowned French Religious Antiquities Expert. All items from this estate date from the 16th, 17th and 18th century.

Dieppe in France was the region where the very best sculptors worked in the most expensive materials at the end of the nineteenth century, and this is apparent in the delicacy of the hand sculpting and cutting of the Corpus Christi on this beautiful artefact from the 19th Century. The detailing on the three Dieppe pieces: figure of Christ, INRI plaque and the Skull with Crossed Bones - is superb, and they lay perfectly on the intricately carved cross which is fashioned from one single piece of wood, attached to a separate wooden base. The fruitwood cross itself is 12 inches in height and 5 inches wide with a depth of 3.25 inches; it is carved as raw split wood with bark attached that has tendrils of carved ivy snaking around. On the base, which is fashioned as a rocky mound, some of the Instruments of the Passion are laid: The Holy Lance; The Holy Sponge; the Hammer and the Pincers.

The dimensions are:-
The wooden cross is 12" high x 5" wide x 3.25" deep...(30.5 c 12.5 x 8cm)
The Corpus is 2.75" high x 2.25" wide x 0.75" deep....(7 x 5.5 x 2cm)

This is a delicate French Antique; there are some signs of old worm which has been eradicated - no attempt has been made to disguise it.
