C 1800's UNIQUE DIEPPE Ivory Corpus Christi with Ebonised Crucifix - Beautifully Carved and Drilled Corpus on Cross - RC122.
A magnificent and rare Antique Crucifix - we were very fortunate to be invited to purchase from the estate of a lifelong collection - that of a well renowned French Religious Antiquities Expert. All items from this estate date from the 16th, 17th and 18th century. This particular item is of extremely high quality, hand crafted from the most precious carved materials.
Dieppe in France was the region where the very best sculptors worked in the most expensive materials at the end of the nineteenth century, and this is apparent in the delicacy of the hand sculpting and cutting of the Corpus Christi on this beautiful artefact from the 19th Century. The detailing on the three Dieppe pieces - the figure of Christ, INRI plaque and the Skull with Crossed Bones - is superb, and they lay perfectly on the intricately carved and drilled cross of the same natural white material. The freestanding wooden crucifix with trefoil detail is on a shaped and stepped base with small ball feet.
The finely. carved white Corpus Christi and immediate cross behind are beautifully made, with the cross being 5.5 inches high and 2.75 inches wide. The Body of Christ is 2 inches in length and abut 1.25 in cheese wide. Very clearly hand crafted the cross and figure are affixed with four metal 'nails', as are the separate INRI plaque and the tiny Skull and Crossed Bones beneath e Feet of Christ. The ebonised wooden cross including the base is 11.25 inches in height and 4-1/8 inches wide with a depth of 2.5 inches; it is very smoothly carved and finished with a soft sheen to the black colour.
This is a delicate and unique French Antique with normal signs of age.
