Cream Art Deco Crucifix with Gold Spelter Body of Christ - 13.75"- French 1920s - Distinctive Wall Hanging French Crucifix - RC156
A beautiful Art Deco piece in the more severe style of straight lines with no curves. The inlaid creamy coloured Bakelite is subtly pearlised to give the effect of Mother of Pearl and the crucifix is designed with unusual brass banding and stripes of the same golden metal to the end. The actual base wood of the cross appears to be Mahogany. The spelter Corpus has been gilded with a golden colour that only shows small signs of wear and has a slightly darker golden hue at the head and loincloth.
This wonderful cross comes from a time of innovation in the arts and industry and this item shows just that. The Bakelite shows new colours and techniques never before seen and the design would have been fresh and new making this a must have item for those who could afford it at the time. The back of the cross is fitted with a round silver metal loop so that it can be wall mounted. The crucifix is in entirely original condition.
The wooden cross with inlay is 13.75" / 35cm in height, 7.25" / 18.5cm in width. The body of Christ is 6" / 15cm high and 4" / 10cm wide the depth is 1.25" / 3cm; the total weight is 250g without any packaging.
