Gold Spelter Christ on Cream Art Deco Pearlised Crucifix - 10"- French 1930s - Distinctive Wall Hanging French Crucifix - RC167

This is a true Art Deco piece in every way. The inlaid cream coloured Bakelite is subtly marbled or pearlised to give the effect of Mother of Pearl and the crucifix is designed with unusual gilt stylised wave and zigzag ends, reminiscent of the decoration affixed to the new buildings of the time such as the Empire State or Chrysler building in New York. The actual base timber behind the cross appears to be oak.  The Body of Christ, or the Corpus and decorative finials have been gilded with a golden colour that only shows small signs of wear from cleaning.   

This wonderful cross comes from a time of innovation in the arts and industry and this item shows just that. The Bakelite has new colours and techniques never before seen and the design would have been fresh and new making this a 'must have' item for those who could afford it at the time. A small triangular loop is fitted at the back to allow for wall hanging.
This item originates from a collection we purchased in central France.

The wooden cross with inlay is 10" / 25cm  in height, 5.5" / 14cm in width.  The body of Christ is 4.25" / 11cm high and 3.2" / 8cm wide the depth is 1" / 2.5cm; the total weight is 150g without any packaging.
