French Dieppe Crucifix from 1800's - Beautifully Carved Dieppe Christ on the Cross - Ebony - DIEPPE Carving - RC134
A magnificent and rare crucifix from the Dieppe area of France made in the 1850s. The pale body of Christ, or Corpus Christi, is carved in intricate detail in three pieces of Ivory and laid on a crucifix crafted from Ebonised timber with a broad chamfered edge, giving this item real impact. This superb piece of work was crafted by a French Dieppe Craftsman at the middle of the nineteenth century. There are the remains of a label to the rear of the cross saying it was given as a 1st communion gift on the 28th of April 1904, but it was not new at that time and many such items were handed down the family. Having stood the test of time it is available in good condition today; it shows some possible restoration to the crown and the cross but this does not detract from the superb quality of the item and materials is reflected in the price.
Dieppe in France was the region where the very best sculptors worked at the end of the nineteenth century and this is apparent in the delicacy of the hand sculpting and cutting of the figure. The detailing on the figure of Christ is superb and the cross is fashioned in four parts, mitred together in the true, age-old craft fashion. This is easily one of the most imposing examples of this type we have seen. Above the head of Christ is a small plaque bearing the symbol 'INRI' for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. At the back of the cross there is a brass loop to allow for wall hanging. As can be seen, the item is in completely original condition and has been left uncleaned. Should you wish to have other pictures to study please contact us and we would be happy to provide them for you.
The dimensions are:-
The wooden cross is 11.8" high x 6" wide x 0.4" deep...300 x 155 x 9mm
The Corpus is 5.5" high x 3.8" wide x 0.75" deep....152 x 95 x 23mm
The Figure of Christ has a small crack at the joints of the arms as it meets the Body that is historic, and slight marks to the cross at the top left and right and as stated possible work to the crown - but considering its age it is in excellent condition.
