A craftsman made figure of Christ on the Cross - this version was made in Italy by the master craftsmen of ANRI. The sculpture in solid wood is beautifully executed with superb attention to detail.
The figure is sculpted from a lighter colour of wood for the body of Christ with a contrasting darker wood species for the cross. The Christ figure wears a woven crown on his head and the nails to his hands and feet are represented in wood, part of the sculpture. Above the head of Christ is the plaque bearing the letters INRI. The cross measures 14" high and 8.25" wide. The depth including the Body of Christ is 2.25". The Christ figure measures 7". There is a metal inset to the rear of the cross to allow for wall hanging.
The ANRI woodcarving company was founded in 1912 and the business continues in Italy today, where the artists and sculptors specialise in carvings of Christ and the Saints, religious scenes like the Nativity and also some whimsical characters.
