Unusual Antique French Ecclesiastical Cross -  Crucifix - Priests Pectoral Cross - Beautiful French Artefact - RC141

A French Priest or Nun's Pectoral Cross, this is an unusually old, well worn and loved item and comes complete with a pocket chain.  The central cross is made from Ebony Wood, surrounded by a thick band or Brass. The hanging loop is a part of the surround and is linked to the attached Pocket Chain.

This crucifix belonged to a member of the French Clergy and was bequeathed to a colleague; it was then passed to a friend and eventually left as part of an inheritance to his grandson who did not follow the same religious path, and it was he who sold it to us.

A wonderfully old piece, the solid bronze cast Corpus Christi has been handled and revered for many years and the features have softened through time. Behind the Head of Christ there is a small plaque with rays of light. Below the Feet of Christ, there once was a skull and crossed bones, but that is long gone. At the head of the cross, the little plaque that would have had 'INRI' engraved on it is also gone, leaving only traces on the wood where it once moved against it and the flattened bronze pin. The Pocket Chain is made from plain silver metal with a loop of just over ..5" attaching to the crucifix; this is followed by a tightly twisted piece around 1.75" long and then a little linked chain of about 2.25". It ends in a 'T-Piece of twisted metal similar to the first portion. The chain is a beautifully made, bespoke item.

This is a lovely, original piece that has been cherished for many years; the addition of the pocket chain is a very special and personal feature. We do have similar crucifixes in stock, but this is the only one with a chain.

The cross is 7.75" high by 3.5" wide and under 1" deep (19.5cm x 9cm x 2.5cm). The Pocket Chain measures 4.5" (11.5cm) long starting from the loop attached to the crucifix and ending at the middle of the T-piece. Without packaging the Crucifix weighs under 150 grams.
