Antique French Leather Bound Stations of the Cross - Early 20th C French Religious Travel Shrine - RO013

A pocket sized, portable Stations of the Cross devotional, cased in soft embossed leather, from France. Made around the 1920's, this is an early version of theis item, other similar items came later. The interior shows the fourteen Stations of the Cross in detailed embossed round plaquettes, pressed from a silver metal plate with the finest touch of gilding. On the left hand side, the image of the Crucifixion is displayed, with a wooden cross two inches high, bearing the silver and gilt gold Corpus Christi, or Body of Christ. The entire story of the Passion is depicted in beautifully detailed little works of art on the metal and around the plaquettes the background is decorated with a chalice, flowers, leaves and vines. The and outer leather has gold embossed design and a black IHS monogram to the front.

The case acts as a leather hinge and has some colour variations due to use, also there is some sign of rubbing on the outside exactly as you would expect from such and item. That said it is remarkable condition for its age. We have given the case a very light clean but it is still in very original, slightly grimy, condition. The inside is a delightful surprise with both sides of the inner case covered in a silvered embossed arched metal sheet, out of which the very detailed images of the Passion rise in numerical sequence. Each side carries seven images and the crucifix on the left. A very beautiful portable devotional creation, sure to be treasured.

    Dimensions are closed 130mm / 5.2” high, 88mm / 3.5” wide and 12mm /  3/4” deep, open it is 130mm / 5.2" high and 180mm / 7.2" wide plus the closing press stud tab. The item weighs 110grms.
