Antique Boxed Set of Glass Cupping Jars - Antique French Glass Suction Cups - Medical Suction Jars - AQ67

Now a trendy and much sought-after item frequently used by the rich and famous, we have a vintage original full set of twelve clear glass suction or cupping jars. The jars are all original and at the time of use being fairly expensive, they could be loaned by a pharmacy on prescription from a medical practitioner for a fee. Boxed as they were when they were left, these 12 are all in perfect, grimy condition - and the tactile rounded shape of the glass with a flattened bottom would certainly - once nicely cleaned - lend itself to modern day drinking glasses : shot glasses, liquor glasses, etc. Exceedingly different from anything your friends and qauaintances might have!

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing technique that some people use to ease pain. A provider places cups on your back, stomach, arms, legs or other parts of your body. A vacuum or suction force inside the cup pulls your skin upward. The therapy (aka myofascial decompression) can be traced back to ancient Chinese, Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures. The technique is even described in one of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, which means that ancient Egyptians may have been using cupping therapy as early as 1550 B.C. This French set of twelve "Ventouses" (suction cups) actually dates from the late 1800's.

Made in the late 1800s or early 1900s for Pharmacies to sell in France, these glass cupping jars or 'Ventouses Chinois' are still in the original card box, with the cotton wool that when lit was used to withdraw the air from them to use as suction cups on the skin. At the bottom of the box we found a piece of brown wrapping paper with two French red 3 franc stamps from 1941 - when the box was put to one side during the Second World War and never used again. We purchased them in a house clearance in the town of Chinon in central France that is famous for its wonderful old fortress once visited by Joan of Arc - amongst fine wine and other things.
