Naive Carving - Antique French Wooden Carved Decorative Panel - French Carved Panel from the 1900s - AQ2/44

This French antique oak panel is carved in a superb naive style, very unlike the contemporary works of the time. We know that it was carved in the home town of Chatellerault in the very early 1900's, by a former sailor (later to become a Great-Grandfather - we bought it from his Great Grandson! ) who had to leave his life at sea due to illness that resulted in disability. During his time of convalescence, he made several carved items, all in the same naive, folk-style. This particular image, originally made as an oak cupboard door panel, appears to be a realisation of mixed memories from when he was at sea.

In the image, the couple are wearing traditional dress of some kind; the woman is in clogs while the man, sitting under a palm tree, is in long boots. The unorthodox carving style looks like a mix of Polynesian, Spanish and Breton, and has a futuristic tall 'pyramid' in the background. The relief carvings on the panel are made using additional layers of oak. The design is beguiling, very full of detail and the more you look, the more you see. A very interesting feature for any room, great for interior design and an extremely interesting talking point.

Measuring 24.5" (62cm) high by 16.25" (41cm) wide, the depth is about 2" or 5cm at the deepest point. It is unframed, and would make a stunning stand-alone wall feature, or could be incorporated once again into a piece of furniture. A wonderful piece.
