Onyx & Cloisonné / Champleve Wall Crucifix Holy Water Font - French Bénitier - Solid Brass, White Onyx Holy Water Font - RB106
A beautifully made and finished Religious French Holy Water Font, or Bénetier, dating from around the late 1800's in France. This is a very heavy, high quality item for its size; the Crucifix has a gilt finish with enamelled inlay or Champleve, the ornate gilt font or Vasque is decorated in the same manner, as it is so small it has no lid and shows signs if damaged to the back were it has had constant use. The whole item rests on a cross of solid white onyx 8mmm thick. The entire assembly then rests on a bed of solid brass, slightly larger than the onyx, giving the effect of a brass frame. On the reverse, the assembly is held together by three heavy brass screws and there is a brass loop on the top fixing to allow for secure wall hanging. Generally a font is used in the Catholic Faith where, in the home, it is placed by the entrance doorway or beside the head of the bed.
