Antique French Bevelled Glass Jewellery Box - French Jewellery Box - French Jewellery Display Case Original Silk c.1890 - J2/32
A very beautiful item that we found at a market in Paris. A lovely glass jewel case made in the late 1800's, with very thick, green-tinged bevel-edged glass on five of the six sides, encased in a decorative ormolu and brass decorative frame. It is in overall good antique condition but unfortunately the front glass panel has at some time in its history received a slight knock, causing a small area of crazing to the front glass panel (about the size of a little fingernail); however the front and back panels could be professionally swapped. The hinge for the lid is completely intact as is the curled metal loop at the front that keeps the lid closed. The box retains the original green raised silk cushioning to the base, faded and frail at the front and this together with the glass at the front shows it has real history and that someone loved and cherished it, using it on a daily basis.
Tiny little glass jewel cases were all the rage in Paris at the end of the 19th Century and the love of them lasted until the 1930's when they became 'old fashioned'. Today however, we can appreciate the time and professional experience that has gone in to making such a lovely item. This would make a lovely antique gift for anyone who treasures little items of the past for display. The costume brooch in the photographs is not included in this sale.
This glass display case is 3.7" / 9.5cm long, 3" / 7.5cm high and 2.75" / 7cm deep and weighs 250grams
