A large 1950's example of what is known as a Convent Crucifix acquired from an actual Irish Convent before it closed and the sisters moved to a newer larger city centre convent. This is a super rare polychrome painted example, we only know of two others from this German manufacturer - but they were both painted gold rather than polychrome.
The polychrome paintwork has been done by a very professional, artistic hand. There are small amounts of loss to the paint on the right knee and under the arms where the cross had been suspended from the wall on two nails rather than using the hanging loop at the top. However, this in no way detracts from the true beauty of this wonderful crucifix.
The cross itself is made from two solid pieces of mahogany, joined where they meet at the centre. This heavy mahogany has a fine dark coloured grain. The hight of the cross is 20", or 50cm. The width is 11" or 28cm and the depth of the wood is 3/4" or just over 2cm. The Body of Christ is just over 9.5" or 24cm long and the outstretched arms reach 7.25" or 18.5cm. This is a striking, unusually large and well made piece. The weight without any packaging is over 2.2lb or 1 kg.
