Antique Irish Bronze - Sacred Heart Association Medal - Pilgrim Medallion - In honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus - RM114
This is a wonderful original large antique medal or pendant from the late 1800's in an unusual 'lozenge' shape. It shows slight wear to the front and back as would be expected with constant touching and cleaning over the years. Although we have seen lots of copies or direct castings from this medal we have never seen an early original item like this. With an integral loop at the top of the medallion, this can be suspended on a chain for wearing or for display. There is no chain with this item.
A beautifully crafted antique bronze metal medallion - its shows the lord Jesus on one side holding his sacred heart with the text "BEHOLD THIS HEART WHICH HAS SO MUCH LOVED MAN" the other has an image of just the sacred heart and reads " ASSOCIATION IN HONOR OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS". It came from a now closed convent in Ireland. Believed to have been minted in Dublin. Possibly minted to take to the American missions as the spelling of Honour ( English or Irish spelling ) is Honor ( American spelling ). The British stopped using Honor in the late 1600's so perhaps this was literally copied from an earlier script.
Although the first convent was founded in 1801 in France it spread across the world in missions.In 1818 Rose Philippine Duchesne first brought the Society to the Americas, establishing the first free school west of the Mississippi in St. Charles, Missouri. The Society opened institutions of higher education for women in Cincinnati; Grand Coteau, Louisiana; Lake Forest, Illinois; New York; Torresdale (a suburb of Philadelphia), Pennsylvania; San Diego; Omaha; St. Louis; San Francisco; Seattle and Newton, Massachusetts.
This is a lovely antique item that would make a gorgeous antique gift for any celebration. It stands 2.4" or 60mm high inc the ring and 1.3" or 33mm wide.
