Unusually large copper Virgin Mary and St Joseph medal or Madallion - O Mary conceived without sin pray for us - St Joseph example of humility - RM113
Highly unusual and extremely rare, an antique Irish copper amulet depicting St Joseph and the Virgin Mary. On one side we have a depiction of Mary holding her hands down with rays passing down from her hands to the earth below. This image is surrounded by the words O MARY CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN PRAY FOR US WHO HAVE RECOURSE TO THEE - as can be found on miraculous medals. The other side has an image of St Joseph sitting on a cushioned seat with the Christ child standing on his left knee, Joseph holding him with his left hand. In his right hand he holds a Lily. This is surrounded by the words ST JOSEPH EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE PRAY FOR US. This item was worn daily for many years and as copper a fairly soft metal, some features are rubbed - but this only goes to enhance the charm of this item.
A beautifully crafted antique copper metal medallion created in the 1800's in Ireland. The medallion is 1.75" (or 48mm) in hight and 1.25" (32mm) wide in a 'lozenge' shape, the top has an inbuilt loop so that the medallion can be worn as a pendant with a suitable chain, or hung in a display. There is no chain with this item.
We have seen newer versions of this medal in cheaper metals such as Aluminium; looking at the quality of these less expensive medallions, they may have been made by taking a mould of an original such as this.
