RARE Signed Bronze Plaque - ANTIQUE - Jesus Christ Praying in the Garden at Gethsemane -  RP110

A rare, small 19th century plaque from France depicting Jesus Christ in prayer in the gardens of Gethsemane, on the Mount of Olives. The casting of this bronze has the figure of Christ with His hands clasped in prayer in relief; in the background, the two figures are most probably the two sons of Zebedee, who went with him - although they were to watch over Him, they fell asleep.  Peter, who was also with the party, is not on the plaque. In the distance across the Kidron Valley can be seen a large building, the edge of the City. A very simple and striking depiction of this, one of the most important moments in the Story of Christ. The plaque carries a signature on the back, possibly 'Dupoinart' or 'Jupoinart'.

(Luke explains, "Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives" (21:37). It was a rhythm of life that week of the Festival - days in the temple, evenings on the Mount of Olives, located across the Kidron Valley from the city.)

The plaque is cast in solid bronze and dates from the very late 1800's.  The measurements are: Height 6 - 1/8" and width 4 - 1/8" ( 15.5 x 10.5cm). The depth is about half an inch or just over one centimetre. There is no backing or frame. Without any packaging the plaque weighs 0.35 kg.
