By an unknown French artist, this oil on board painting is a folk art picture dating from the later part of the 1800's, a date supported by the costumes. This looks to have been some studies for another one or maybe two, more elaborate paintings. One side shows a young couple ready to go out perhaps to a dance or the theatre; the other side shows a French man in a uniform - perhaps military or of one of the other Services. He seems very happy to stand for his portrait with his faithful dog at his side; and the dog does seem to be smiling too.
The panel is 36" x 16" and weighs 850grams.
An original piece of French folk art that would be ideal for anyone trying to create that French country living look. It is in 'as found' condition; we have done no cleaning or restoration to the images. Painted in oils on wooden board. The board could be framed so that it could be switched over, giving a different image every other day. There are signs of slight damage to the top and bottom edges that can be easily trimmed and have no real effect on the images.
