French Catholic Burse from the 1950s: Vintage Burse from France - Catholic Burse to hold the Corporal - Vintage Catholic Burse -RT116

We have various examples of these wonderful hand made pieces, they are separated into various groups that are available within our shop.
These can not only be used for the purpose for which they were intended but also make great wall art especially in groups, or under religious statues as a great base.

This is a single Catholic Burse, which is used to carry the Corporal to the Church Alter during the Mass and other services was made in France in the 1950's / 70's. The linen lined interior is folded to form an envelope that can open to take the corporal and close neatly over it. Often a Burse may be hand made by a dedicated member of a particular Church or Congregation so becomes a very personal item of that Church or Priest.

This particular Burse, from a small village community Church in France, was made in the 1960's by a lady parishioner. It is in extremely good, Vintage condition and would make a beautiful wall display, possibly in a frame. The front fabric panel shows some slight spots as seen on the photograph, but this does not detract from the overall look. Adept at using a sewing machine, she has embroidered in gold, russet and yellow tones, the individual letters and foliage that are appliquéd on to the front cover of the Burse. The background fabric she has used is a heavy cream damask linen with Christian symbol of IHS, onto which she has hand sewn the decorative letters. The Symbolic trim around the edges have been sewn on by hand, and the rear of the Burse is covered with a soft cotton fabric in a deep red; there are some slight marks on the back, perhaps from an oily substance, very faint. The interior lining is plain white, fine weave linen.

The Burse measures 11" high (28cm) by nearly 10" wide (25cm) and when opened the envelope is 5" (13cm) wide. A good clean example of a hand made artefact for the Catholic Church.
