Antique Lourdes Pastilles a L'Eau de la Grotte - Collectable Tin - Lourdes Holy Pastilles Tin - Religious Collectable - RO10

From the Christian Pilgrim site of Lourdes in the Occitaine Region of France, this Antique and very unusual tin is for Pastilles: sweets made using water from the Holy Grotto. The pressed metal hand-constructed tin is believed to be quite early, and may possibly come from the late 1800's.  Many tins were produced in the very beginning of the twentieth century, originally as tourist items.  Lourdes is known for the 'Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes', or the Domain, a major Catholic Pilgrimage Site. Each year, millions of the faithful visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, in 1858, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman. In the grotto, pilgrims can drink or bathe in the Holy water flowing from a spring, believed to have miraculous healing powers.

The tin lid decorated in dark and lighter blue and gold, depicts Our Lady the Virgin Mary in the form of the statue at the site of the Vision, and the base shows a scene from the late 18th or early 19th century of people promenading in front of the main Church in Lourdes.

This is a round container with lid, made by E. Malespine of 12, rue de la Gare in Lourdes, shows signs of age on the outer painted decorated surface with some small areas of loss of paint, but no more than would be expected. The lining of the tin, although clean, is darkened with age where the silver tin surface has worn away, and would benefit from a paper or tissue lining if to be given as a gift. 

This tin measures 5"or 125mm in diameter and is 1.75" or 45mm high.  Without packaging, the tin weighs 100 grammes.
