Antique Lourdes Water Canisters - Early 20th Century - Three Holy Water Tins - Lourdes Holy Water - Illustrated Tins from Lourdes - RO11

From the Christian Pilgrimage site of Lourdes in the Occitaine Region of France, these antique and very unusual Holy Water Containers or 'Bidons' were used to transport water taken from the Well within the Grotto. 

Two large 2-litre versions and one smaller half-litre holy water carriers, two of which have their original carrying straps. 

One of the larger examples has an illustration of the grotto on one side, the Basilica of the Immaculate conception on the other and on one end is St Bernadette genuflecting to the Virgin Mary. It is marked with Bidon De La Canonisation St Bernadette Marque Deposee. This also still has the tag and seal on the top to guarantee the quality of the canister. The other large bidon, being the oldest, has become faded but you can see below the ND crest the interior and exterior of the basilica Notre-Dame du Rosaire; this being the first building place on the site. It also has and image of the Virgin Mary on the end with an angelic face above. Lastly, the smaller bidon has an image of Mary the Immaculate on one side and the Lourdes site on the Basilicas, Churches and Chapels. The text reads "Souvenir de Notre Dame de Lourdes Eau de la Grotto". All three have the Notre Dame Crest embossed into the caps.

The three together would make a fantastic display for those who love the story of St Bernadette and would illustrate the way the site has flourished over the years. We have left them uncleaned and in completely original condition, and the two larger in particular are in need of TLC - however all three would benefit from a very gentle, all-over cleanse.

The containers measure 8.5"or 22cm high by 6" or 15cm wide 4" or 10cm deep for the two larger ones and 5.5" or 13.3cm high, 4.5" or 12cm wide and 2.5" or6.5cm deep for the smaller one. Without packaging the three together weigh 550 grams.
