Superb Large Cast Metal Christ on Intricately Carved Ebonised Wall Crucifix - 15.5 Inches in Height - French c.1890 - RC109

A UNIQUE piece of craftsmanship in carved softwood originally for the Christmas celebrations of a Church in Central French.  The patina of the carving shows signs of its history including the repairs to broken ends of the star - and the beautifully carved Mary and Child is absolutely stunning. This is a totally unique and irreplaceable piece from c17th/18th century - or possibly even older. Here is a chance to become the custodian of a small piece of Ecclesiastical History.

This would make a great Christmas centrepiece for any home, but would look wonderful on the wall at any time of the year.

The very tip of the upper left hand point of the star is missing and small chips where the plaster over the wood has worn off but this just adds to its charm. The star shows signs of old worm, however as with all our old wooden pieces it has been professionally treated. This was very obviously a highly treasured item within the Church community as it has been repaired on several occasions over the many years of its life, with new tips to the points affixed with animal glue and re-covered with gold leaf. 

We are listing this as an item from the seventeenth century but believe it may be considerably older.

Dimensions are 17” / 430mm square 3” / 75mm deep. Without any packaging the carving weighs 0.9 kg.
