Irish Statue of Saint Anne - Chalkware Polychrome - Coloured Freestanding Statue of the Mother of the Virgin Mary c.1900s - RS126

Beautifully made and decorated, this antique Irish plaster statue of The Virgin Mary's Mother, Saint Anne was made in Ireland at the very start of the 20th Century. The statue is freestanding and measures 12.75" or 32cm in height, including the green and gold coloured plinth.  The statue is approx. 5" or 12.5cm wide, 3.25" or 8.5cm deep and weighs 0.95kg or 2 lbs.  The main colour of this little statue is  the burgundy of the robe with Anne clothed in white.  There is some gold decoration to her cloak within the folds. We have other items decorated by the same Irish artist of the time with a very individual style of painting eyes to reflect sadness and humility. This statuette was acquired from a convent in East Cork that was clearing out old and unused items prior to a move.  It had probably been in the lady Chapel or on the Alter for Our Lady.

Tradition holds that St. Anne, or Ann, is the mother of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. There is no mention of Anne in the bible. Non-biblical books from the early Christian centuries acknowledge Mary’s parents as Joachim and Anne. These sources claim that Joachim and Anne were childless for many years of their marriage. The angel Gabriel appeared to them separately and declared that they would in fact bear a child who must be dedicated to God. Hence, Anne became the mother of our Blessed Virgin Mary. Here, Saint Anne stands with her arm around the shoulders of a young girl who is reading from a scroll.

Saint Anne is the patron saint of unmarried women, housewives, women in labor, grandmothers, childless people, equestrians, lacemakers, miners, the poor, and seamstresses. The most well-known patronage of St. Anne is that of grandmothers. Certainly as the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus Christ, St. Anne was a woman of great virtue and love.

This statue dates from the very early years of the 1900's and is in incredibly good condition; unlike other statues from the same estate, this has not suffered damage from being handled - in the Chapel or on the Alter, the statue would be less accessible.
