Saint Joseph with Jesus - Unusual Antique Statue - Irish Statue - Joseph Patron Saint of Fathers an Barristers - RS137
Beautifully made, antique plaster statue of Saint Joseph standing with his son, the Young Jesus Christ. We have never seen another of this style of statue with Saint Joseph standing holding his Axe in the crook of his right arm, symbolising his work as a carpenter, whilst his left hand rests on the shoulder of the young Jesus - who, with his hands together in prayer, is adorned with a very Art Deco-styled gold halo. Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of all Fathers as well as being the Saint for Barristers.
Although the statue shows signs of age with some small chips to the paintwork as would be expected, there is no real damage to the figures although we note an area on the top of Joseph's back that appears to have had some sort of wear that has been repainted.
There is the registration number 309 at the back of the base plinth, but unfortunately no maker's mark. However due to the style and type of casting it is most probably by an Italian/Irish maker from Dublin, Louigi Pacini and Sons aas it is typical of their work. Regarding the history of the statue, the lady we acquired this unusual piece from had kept it in her home since receiving it as a gift from a nun, who had taught her as a child at a local small convent near Cork - just before it sadly closed in the Nineteen Nineties.
