Antique French Barn Owl  / Vintage Taxidermy Barn Owl - Tyto alba - Owl on Ebonised Vine Root - TX1/49

Having seen quite a few Barn Owls of this type before, we have found this French Antique one in very good condition for the age; and we call this species the "Quiet One". We had these beautiful birds around our outbuildings in France, and they are amazing to see at night - with simply no noise at all, they pass overhead like lovely little ghosts. The reason can be seen at the edge of the wing feathers - tiny, short comb like ends along the edge part the air as the owl glides without a sound. Our owl here is sitting on an ebonised, antique vine root that complements his colouring perfectly. The model has been crafted by a skilful taxidermist in the late 1800's to achieve something special and the techniques used show it has great age.

The Common Barn Owl is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world and one of the most widespread of all species of birds, being found almost everywhere in the world. Male Barn Owls are smaller than the females and this appears to be a male, with very few speckles on the breast feathers. As may be expected with a bird of this age that has not been under glass, there is evidence of his age, but overall the bird and stand are in very good antique condition. This is an extremely characterful specimen, and we would love to see it go to a good home.
