Antique Pair of Taxidermied Barn Owl - Tyto Alba - 1910 mounted on Vine Wood Stand - Mounted Owls in a Natural Pose - TX/69

Very unusual pair of Barn Owls. The female is to the left as you look at them and the male on the right positioned a little lower.

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world and one of the most widespread of all species of birds. These particular specimen, mounted in Europe in the early Nineteen Hundreds onto a piece of old vine, it is a superb example of a couple of snow-white Barn Owls. We have made a new base or stand for these birds so the original wall mount can be used to wall hang or table top via the new stand, by doing this it has been upgraded to something far more suitable - that shows the birds off to their best. Sometimes referred to as a 'Ghost Owl' because of the white underside that is seen in flight. Two beautiful specimens in very good condition for their age.
On its stand the whole thing measures 17" / 43cm high, 19" 48cm wide and 14.5" / 37cm deep. They weigh 2.3 kilos or 5lb.

With a heart-shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white underparts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much-loved countryside bird. Widely distributed across the Ireland, and indeed the world, this bird has suffered declines through the 20th century and is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT in the 1950s and '60s. This may well have been one of the birds to suffer from the poison. If considered as a single global species, the barn owl is the second most widely distributed behind only the peregrine falcon and with today's ecological awareness, is at far less risk than in the previous century. The owl is a nocturnal hunter of rodents and indeed In some projects, use of rodenticides for pest control was replaced by the installation of nest boxes for barn owls. It has been shown that the use of nest boxes is both less costly and more environmentally friendly than traditional control with rodenticides.
