Antique French Taxidermy -  Green Male Woodpecker - Picus viridian - from 1920 mounted on wooden stand with Driftwood TX1/66

This is a lovely little intelligent looking male specimen, dating from the nineteen twenties comes from France.
He has been remounted in our workshops as the original stand had deteriorated beyond repair; and is now perched on this lovely piece of drift wood from our local beach. The bird stands 14" / 355mm high. 8" / 200mm wide and 7" / 175mm deep. The weight without packaging is 600g.

The European Green Woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpeckers that we used to find in the area where we lived in France and we regularly spotted a pair in our old garden. The bird has a heavy-looking body, short tail and a strong, long bill. It is green on its upperparts with a paler belly, bright yellow rump and red on the top of its head. The black 'moustache' has a red centre in males. They have an undulating flight and a loud, laughing call. 'Yaffle' was among many English folk names for the European green woodpecker relating to its laughing call, and 'Professor Yaffle' in the children's TV Series "Bagpuss" was based loosely on this bird.
