Vintage Children's Shoes: Shoes c.1920 - Brown Leather Lace Up - Sturdy, Worn and Repaired, Nailed Soles - KC2/55

If only the shoes could talk ... this pair of shoes came from France and date from the early 1920's. They would make very interesting and unusual décor or would be a true advertisement for long-lasting quality in a shop window. Great display items.

The shoes were made for a child, and they have been made for a family with at least some money - the ruched decoration in the leather bears testament to that. The fabric-lined uppers, although originally stitched by machine, have been re-stitched by hand to the soles and it is with the soles that the story really starts. These shoes have been re-soled with leather a number of times and the final sole has had an extra toe-fitting nailed in place and then metal segs added to the toe area. The heels, which are made of layered leather sheets have been replaced at least three times and the final heel again, nailed into place and metal segs applied. All the leather layers have been hand cut, like a jigsaw. Just imagine.

Segs were invented in the UK by John Blakey in 1880 and very useful too - we would estimate that the shoes we have here have lasted through at. least three members of the same family - perhaps more, knowing how quickly children's feet can grow. Even the inside of the left heel has been repaired!

Wooden shoe trees or stretchers in the photographs are not included in this sale.
