French Bread Platter Set - Hand Carved French Bread Board

A vintage  Bread Serving Set  -  a beautifully carved and decorated French Bread Board Platter made of solid, hand turned and  carved wood together with a Bread Knife having matching carving on the wooden handle.  The wood is French Pine that has been given a dark colour and hand-chiselled to create a substantial oval platter with a carved relief border that reads "Donnez nous notre pain quotidien" - "Give us our Daily Bread". Platters like this in this rustic farmhouse style are still used in homes around France today and also in high-end restaurants to give that family-friendly, country kitchen feel.

This bread set was made in the Nineteen Seventies in the Grenoble Region of France. The bread board shows signs of having been used infrequently. It was hand-made in the 1970s for use as a general bread cutting and serving board. The board, or platter, is in very good vintage used condition with deeply carved leaves, berries and flowers around the wide rim. The carving of the words is in a scripted style which is notoriously difficult and the background to the rim has been given a punched, 'stippled' effect. The knife has the same carvings on the wooden handle and a plain steel blade. 

The oval board is 13.25" or 33..5cm at the widest diameter and 10.5" or 27cm across the shorter one. The depth is under 1.5" or 4cm.The bread knife is 9.5" or 24m in length. Without packaging, the set weighs 0.55 kg.
