Antique French 28 inch Dark Oak Wall Church Crucifix - Trefoil Detail

A large 1900s example of the Crucifixion acquired from a farmer in the Loire Valley whose family kept it in the Estate Chapel which is no longer in use and has sadly fallen into disrepair. The antique Body of Christ is cast in very heavy metal and has been painted in silver. Attached to the cross by three large screws, the casting size of the body is quite unusually large against the cross.  There is no maker's mark visible, but sometimes, the mark is hidden on the back.  This is a hollow metal figure cast in one single piece, but still very heavy. Above the head of Christ is the plaque 'INRI'.  There is a metal loop attached to the back of the cross, to allow for wall hanging.

The cross itself is made from two solid, shaped dark oak pieces, invisibly joined where they meet at the centre. This heavy oak has a dark coloured grain. The length of the cross is 28", (two feet four inches in Britain) or 71cm. The width is 17" or 43cm and the depth of the wood is 3/4" or just over 2cm. The Body of Christ is just over 14" or 35cm long and the outstretched arms reach 8.5" or 21.5cm. This is a striking, unusually large and well made piece. The weight without any packaging is over 2 kg.
