Antique French Satinwood Banded Ivory Crucifix from c.Mid 1800's - Beautifully Carved Dieppe Christ on the Cross - DIEPPE Carving - RC135

A magnificent and rare crucifix from the Dieppe area of France made in the 1850s. The wooden cross of the crucifix is in a wider style than usual, giving room for extra detailing. The pale body of Christ, or Corpus Christi, is carved in intricate detail in three pieces of ivory and laid on a crucifix crafted from soft wood with satinwood banding and a fine brass inlay in Gothic style veneer. This superb piece of work was crafted by a French Dieppe Craftsman in the middle of the nineteenth century.  Having stood the test of time it is available in fantastic condition today; the superb quality of the item and materials is reflected in the price.

Dieppe in France was the region where the very best sculptors worked at the end of the nineteenth century and this is apparent in the delicacy of the hand sculpting and cutting of the figure. The detailing on the figure of Christ is superb and the cross is fashioned in four parts, mitred together in the true, age-old craft fashion. This is easily one of the finest examples of this type of work that we have seen. Above the head of Christ is a small plaque bearing the symbol 'INRI' for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. At the back of the cross there is a brass loop to allow for wall hanging. As can be seen, the item is in completely original condition and has been left uncleaned. Should you wish to have other pictures to study please contact us and we would be happy to provide them for you.

The dimensions are:-
The wooden cross is 15.75" high x 9.75" wide x 0.4" deep...400 x 220 x 11mm
The Corpus is 6" high finger to toe and 5.5" head to toe x 4.5" wide x 1" deep....152 / 145 x 114 x 24mm

There are signs of slight delamination, or cracks to the natural material on the upper part of the body and only one very small piece of the inlay missing on the top right corner of the crossbar - hardly noticeable, but we like to point things out. The Body of Christ and the INRI Plaque, or Scroll, have both collected dust over time and would benefit from a professional clean.
