Towards the end of the nineteenth century this tin box was made in France and has had a long life as the faithful companion to an artist. Whoever the artist was, he or she is long gone by now; the tin box was sold in Versailles, France and at the time it would have been the most modern set an artist could wish for. Completely made of tin, the outside colour is black and the tin shows signs of having had a busy and somewhat hard life. There is a hinged closure and a metal carry handle, and on opening the tin, the yellow interior of the set is offset by the rust and marks of time. The base is divided into two parts; one is the full depth of the tin and takes the portable tin water bottle complete with steel screw cap. The other part holds a lift-out tray and has dividers along the length to take 12 pastilles of paint, though some are displaced -  and a longer space to hold other items; this is where the retailer's mark is: Aux Deux Griffons, an art supplies shop in Versailles. Today, the beautiful arched, Art Nouveau designed door still stands beside the shop. Under the lift-out tray is a further section sub divided for 18  paint pastilles.

The set is in completely untouched, original condition and weighs 722 grammes with no packaging. A great historical item.
