Rare Antique French Hand Carved Ivory Travel or Traveling Crucifix - Boxed with Purple Velvet Insert C 1900s - Beautiful French Artefact - RC151

A rare and very special French Antique Travel Crucifix - in the original, shaped box with deep purple velvet lining. The cross itself is very plain, in an ebonised wood with a cream coloured Corpus or Body of Christ, made in three separate pieces of Ivory. The main body of bone is made from one piece of the material and the two arms fit together in to the body using tiny pegs that fit into holes drilled in at the sides of the shoulders. The Figure of Christ is under 3" tall and 2.5" wide. The ends of the fingers are missing from his left hand where the nail has pierced the material. Below the Feet of Christ, which are pinned individually to The Cross, there is a tiny skull with two crossed bones beneath.  Above His head there is a small INRI scroll. One the back of the Cross there is an original label with writing and a hanging loop so that it can be wall hung.

The Crucifix fits snugly into the original velvet lined box. The outside of the box is black tooled very old leather in extremely good condition. The box is fitted with a single brass hinge at the top and a brass spring closure with a push pin. The original satin ribbons that would have held the lid open are in place but not attached to the base.
 
The Cross itself is 6.5" or 16.5cm high and 3" or just under 8cm wide. The box measures just under 7.5" by 3.5" (19 x 9cm). Once in the box, the crucifix is held in place with no movement.
