French Taxidermied Barn Owl - c1920 Antique - Mounted in Flight - Owl in a Natural Pose on Antique Stand - TX1/65

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world and one of the most widespread of all species of birds. This particular specimen, mounted in France in the very early Nineteen Twenties, is a superb example of a tan and snow-white coloured Barn Owl. This beautiful hunting bird is sometimes referred to as a 'Ghost Owl' because of the white underside that is seen in flight.

A superb museum-quality antique specimen in great condition, mounted on a freestanding antique ebonised stand, which means it doesn't have to be wall mounted - the usual way that most in flight birds are displayed. On purchase, we were advised that this item came from a private collection in France.  The collection had been displayed in large glass cases;  that protection from light and dust has helped to retain the antique Barn Owl's true beauty.

With a heart-shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white underparts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much-loved countryside bird. Widely distributed across Europe, and indeed the world, this bird has suffered declines through the 20th century and is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT in the 1950s and '60s.  If considered as a single global species, the barn owl is the second most widely distributed, behind only the Peregrine Falcon and with today's ecological awareness, is at far less risk than in the previous century. The owl is a nocturnal hunter of rodents and indeed In some projects, use of rodenticides for pest control was replaced by the installation of nest boxes for barn owls. It has been shown that the use of nest boxes is both less costly and more environmentally friendly than traditional control with rodenticides.

This wonderful creature together with the stand weighs in at just under 1.1kgs or approx. 2 lbs,
The overall height is 30" / 76cm high and 12" / 30.5cm wide and 12" / 30.5cm deep.

The item will be carefully packed inside a wooden crate for transport for support (if possible using recycled materials ) and shipped using the Irish Postal system An Post
