Our Lady of Miracles - Our Lady of Graces - Madonna del Miracolo - Silver  Relief Metal Plaque - Repousée Madonna RP/117

This is a very unusual and highly attractive piece of Antique Spanish Wall Art:- Silver Repousée work (often referred to as Bas Relief or Embossed Artwork) is made from a silver plated, embossed copper panel. The image of Mary - similar to the Madonna del Miracolo - is pressed into the panel which has then been given a high-grade silver coating.  This depiction of the Virgin Mary with lowered hands and rays issuing from her to the ground is often referred to as Mary of Miracles, as portrayed on the 'Miraculous Medal'.

It has visited our workshop were it was removed from the frame and professionally cleaned, we did not remove the small dint in the top right as we think this is park of its history but could easily be tweeked at a later date should you wish.

In this golden-framed, antique silver picture, Mary stands on a small mound with a snake visible beneath her feet. The snake represents evil, or Satan - Mary is often depicted in this way because her entire life has been one of victory over the devil. In the very beginning of the Bible, in Gen 3:15, God says to the serpent:
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”    The Douay-Rheims translation (an older Catholic translation of the Bible from 1609 AD) says that “she” will bruise the head of the serpent, not “he”. This means that it is the woman that will destroy the devil, not her seed.

Around the head of the Madonna there is a halo of 12 stars, and written in Spanish:  "Oh Maria sin pecado concebida, rogad pour nosotros queen recurrimos a vos!
"Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee!"

The original image of "Madonna del Miracolo" is in a painting in a side altar of the Church of Saint Andrea delle Fratte in Rome where an apparition was witnessed by one Alphonse Ratisbonne. Ratisbonne was an Italian  non-practising Jew who, waiting for a friend in the Church had a visitation by the Virgin Mary. He later converted to Catholicism and became a priest; the painting of the apparition remains in the church.  “I had only been in the church a short while when, all of a sudden, I felt totally uneasy for no apparent reason. I raised my eyes and saw that the whole building had disappeared. Only one side chapel had, so to say, gathered all the light. In the midst of this splendor, the Virgin Mary appeared standing on the altar. She was grandiose, brilliant, full of majesty and sweetness, just as she is in the Miraculous Medal. An irresistible force attracted me to her. The Virgin made a gesture with her hand indicating I was to kneel and as if saying ‘very good!’ Although she did not say anything, I understood everything.”

Standing over the altar, Our Lady appeared wearing a crown and a simple long white tunic with a jeweled belt around her waist and blue-green mantle draped over her left shoulder. She gazed at him affably; her hands were open spreading rays of graces. Her bearing was quite regal, not just because of the crown she was wearing. Rather, her height and elegance gave the impression of a great lady, fully conscious of her own dignity. She transmitted both grandeur and mercy in an atmosphere of great peace. She had some of the characteristics of Our Lady of Graces. Alphonse Ratisbonne saw this figure and understood that he was before an apparition of the Mother of God. He knelt down before her and converted.  Following the Ratisbonne experience, the Church commissioned the painting to the description he gave.  Although Ratisbonne was happy with the image, he said that no-one could portray  the true beauty of the face of the Madonna.

The frame is 14.5" / 37cm wide by 18.5" / 47cm high and the lovely relief plaque in silver metal is  11" /28cm wide, 14" / 35.5cm high and 1.5" / 3.8cm deep.
