Female Italian Dunnock  -  Passera Scopaiola - Vintage Italian Taxidermied Dunnock -   1950s Italian Taxidermy  - TX1/76

A beautiful, tiny Dunnock from Italy; in Italian the "Passera Scopaiola" - a small European garden bird of the Hedge Sparrow family, it is often overlooked. But this is a seriously good looking little bird with gorgeous browns and greys, the subtlety of the shading of the grey and brown feathers together with the bright, black eyes, is a revelation.

The Dunnock is a small passerine, or perching bird, found throughout temperate Europe and into Asian Russia. The name "dunnock" comes from the English and Irish 'dun' (dingy brown, dark-coloured) and the diminutive "ock", and "accentor" is from post-classical Latin and means a person who sings with another. Prunella modularis is the genus name: Prunella is from the German Braunelle, "dunnock", a diminutive of braun, "brown". There is little difference in plumage between the male and female.

Our little bird dates from the 1950's, perched on a stand measures 6.5" or 16cm tall in total; 3" or nearly 7.5cm wide and 3" or 7.7cm in depth from beak to tip of the tail. He has a bright, inquisitive gaze and stands on a small column of dark mahogany, both ends of which have been ebonised. The total weight without packaging is 60 grammes.
