Antique Irish Taxidermied Barn Owl - c1920  Mounted Owl in a Natural Pose on a Driftwood  Base - TX1/53

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world and one of the most widespread of all species of birds. This particular specimen, mounted in Ireland in the early Nineteen Hundreds, is a superb example of a classic snow-white Barn Owl. Sometimes referred to as a 'Ghost Owl' because of the white underside that is seen in flight.

This lovely bird came from a lovely old property near Wicklow in the East of Ireland. This came to us on a wooden base that had at sometime been damaged so we have remounted it on this beautiful piece of driftwood from our own beach.

This beautiful specimen is in great condition. With a heart-shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white underparts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much-loved countryside bird. Widely distributed across the Ireland, and indeed the world, this bird has suffered declines through the 20th century and is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT in the 1950s and '60s. This may well have been one of the birds to suffer from the poison. If considered as a single global species, the barn owl is the second most widely distributed behind only the peregrine falcon and with today's ecological awareness, is at far less risk than in the previous century. The owl is a nocturnal hunter of rodents and indeed In some projects, use of rodenticides for pest control was replaced by the installation of nest boxes for barn owls. It has been shown that the use of nest boxes is both less costly and more environmentally friendly than traditional control with rodenticides.

This guy weighs in at just under 0.35kgs / 0.8lbs,  12" / 305mm hight.  12" / 305mm wide and 6" / 150mm deep.
